I am also researching the Kruel last name, ancestry.com is a pretty good place to start.
My grandmother is from stuttgart, germany and her grandfather and great grandfathers last name is Kruel too. Christoph Kruel (1845) and Johan Kruel (date?). Good Luck!

I am taking a wild guess, but here goes. The origin origin may be an ancestor who was “cruel” [English spelling]. I don’t know the name in German, but I would check. Back to basics, many people have surnames or nicknames evolved into surnames based on physical [Tallman, Blackman,] or character attributes [Crook, Friend, Braverman] or trade skills [Carpenter, Mason, Baker]. Look at Ivan the Terrible… Kruel may have “cruel” origins from meideval Europe.
