Update (2014-01-27): Google Acquires Artificial Intelligence Startup DeepMind For More Than $500M
LessWrong discussion of the acquisition: Google may be trying to take over the world
DeepMind Technologies is a new company which describes itself as “an ambitious London-based tech startup, building general-purpose learning algorithms.”
Jaan Tallinn is a top donor of the Singularity Institute (now called the Machine Intelligence Research Institute).
Larry Wasserman reports,
When I was in London in June, I had the pleasure to meet Shane Legg, from Deepmind Technologies. This is a startup that is trying to build a system that thinks. This was the original dream of AI.
As Shane explained to me, the has been huge progress in both neuroscience and ML and their goal is to bring these things together. I thought it sounded crazy until he told me the list of famous billionaires who have invested in the company.
Eliezer Yudkowsky comments,
I wouldn’t endorse their significance the same way, and would stand by my statement that although the AGI field as a whole has perceptible risk, no individual project that I know of has perceptible risk. Shane and Demis are cool, but they ain’t that cool.
